Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has condemned renewed attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents on communities within his senatorial district, describing the situation as alarming and persistent.
The latest assaults occurred on Saturday in Ashigashiya village, located in Gwoza Local Government Area, and Kopul village in Askira-Uba LGA. In Ashigashiya, a disabled resident was reportedly killed after insurgents set his home ablaze, trapping him inside. Several other houses were also torched, while food supplies and livestock were looted during the ആക്രമ.
In Kopul village, no deaths were recorded, but the destruction was extensive. Homes and shops were burned, forcing many residents to flee into surrounding bushes in search of safety.
Speaking in Maiduguri on Sunday, Ndume expressed sympathy for affected families and reiterated his call for stronger federal intervention. He stressed the need to adequately equip security forces to effectively combat insurgency in the region.
“Our armed forces are doing their best, but they are limited by inadequate weaponry,” he said, urging the government to prioritize the training, equipping, arming, and motivation of military personnel.
The senator emphasized the importance of deploying advanced military assets, including Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, fighter jets, and drones, to strengthen ongoing operations against insurgents.
Despite his concerns, Ndume commended the efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces, security agencies, and local support groups such as the Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilantes for their continued sacrifices. He also praised Cameroonian forces for their swift response in helping repel the Ashigashiya attack, noting that their intervention helped prevent further devastation.
