ADC Takes Protest to INEC Headquarters, Mark Insists Situation Is Under Control

Nigeria’s opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) is facing mounting internal tensions, even as its National Chairman, David Mark, insists the situation remains under control.

In a statement marking his 78th birthday, Mark reassured party members and the public that recent challenges confronting the ADC were being managed effectively, emphasizing that there was “no cause for concern.” He described internal disagreements as a natural feature of evolving political institutions, stressing the leadership’s commitment to unity and democratic values.

However, his remarks coincided with a dramatic escalation in the party’s standoff with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). On Wednesday, top ADC figures led a protest to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, demanding the removal of its chairman, Joash Amupitan, over allegations of bias and constitutional breaches.

The protest drew prominent political figures, including Rauf Aregbesola, Atiku Abubakar, Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, underscoring the gravity of the dispute.

During the demonstration, ADC leaders delivered a strongly worded letter to INEC, calling for Amupitan’s immediate resignation or removal. The party accused the electoral body of abandoning neutrality, alleging misconduct, abuse of office, and interference in its internal affairs. It further argued that INEC’s actions risk undermining public trust and jeopardizing the credibility of future elections.

The ADC also challenged what it described as INEC’s attempt to interpret court rulings, insisting that such authority lies solely with the judiciary. The party warned that continued interference could threaten Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and weaken opposition voices ahead of the 2027 elections.

Backing the protest, Obi signaled that the party was prepared to escalate the matter through legal action and broader civic engagement if its demands were not met. He called on Nigerians to defend democratic principles and resist any drift toward a one-party system.

Meanwhile, criticism came from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Its National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, dismissed the opposition’s actions, arguing that parties unable to manage internal crises lack the capacity to govern effectively.

Amid the political tension, lawmaker Abdussamad Dasuki also weighed in, accusing INEC under Amupitan of undermining democratic institutions. He warned that alleged efforts to weaken opposition parties could reverse Nigeria’s democratic gains if left unchecked.

Despite the escalating confrontation, Mark maintained that the ADC leadership remains focused on strengthening the party and preserving democratic governance, even as the dispute with INEC intensifies.
