Javier Mascherano has stepped down as head coach of Inter Miami CF, just months after guiding the club to its first-ever Major League Soccer title.
The 41-year-old Argentine, who took charge in 2024, cited personal reasons for his departure following a landmark 2025 season that saw Miami clinch the MLS Cup for the first time in the club’s history.
In a statement released by the club, Mascherano expressed pride in the achievement and appreciation for his time in charge. “I will always carry with me the memory of our first star,” he said, adding that he would continue to support the team from afar.
Mascherano, a former midfielder for Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona, reunited with former teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez during his stint in Miami. Prior to his club role, he also coached Argentina’s squad at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The club has confirmed that Guillermo Hoyos, previously sporting director and a former Barcelona B coach, will take over managerial duties with immediate effect.
Inter Miami currently sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference after seven matches this season, most recently drawing 2-2 with the New York Red Bulls.
