Electric vehicle giant Tesla has begun production of its highly anticipated autonomous “robotaxi,” known as the Cybercab, according to CEO Elon Musk.
Musk announced the milestone on Friday via a post on X, sharing a short promotional video captioned, “Cybercab has started production.” The 38-second clip, filmed largely from inside the driverless vehicle, shows the Cybercab moving off the factory floor and onto public roads.
In a separate post, Musk also released footage appearing to show multiple gold-colored Cybercabs traveling together in formation, highlighting the company’s progress in autonomous vehicle development.
The announcement comes days after Tesla reported stronger-than-expected first-quarter earnings, posting profits of $477 million. The company had earlier indicated it remains on schedule to begin volume production of both the Cybercab and its electric truck, the Tesla Semi, later this year.
The Cybercab, unveiled in late 2024, is designed as a fully autonomous ride-hailing vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals. At the time of its debut, Musk projected that the vehicle would be commercially available by 2027.
Tesla has already taken early steps toward deployment, launching a limited robotaxi service for select users on an invitation-only basis in Austin last June.
Earlier this year, the company shared an image of employees gathered around what it described as the first Cybercab produced at its Gigafactory in Texas, signaling the transition from concept to manufacturing.
