Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for an immediate review of wages and sweeping economic reforms in Nigeria, citing worsening living conditions and the declining value of workers’ earnings.
In a statement issued on Friday to mark International Workers’ Day, Obi commended Nigerian workers across all sectors, describing them as vital to the country’s survival and stability. He noted that despite facing severe economic challenges, workers continue to sustain families, communities, and key institutions.
Obi expressed concern over the impact of inflation and rising living costs on workers’ incomes, warning that many are struggling to maintain even a basic standard of living. According to him, the current minimum wage is no longer sufficient to meet everyday needs, as increasing food prices, transportation costs, and general economic hardship continue to erode the value of labour.
He stressed that no nation can achieve meaningful development without prioritising the welfare and productivity of its workforce, adding that the well-being of workers directly influences national progress.
Beyond economic reforms, Obi urged citizens to take an active role in shaping governance through democratic participation. He called on workers to support leadership defined by competence, integrity, and compassion, emphasizing the need for accountability in public office.
The former governor concluded by advocating for a more equitable society grounded in fairness and respect for labour, noting that sustainable national growth depends on justice and improved conditions for workers.
