The Peoples Democratic Party has concluded plans to screen former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday as the party’s only presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general election.
The exercise forms part of the party’s nationwide screening of more than 3,000 aspirants seeking various elective positions under the PDP platform.
A 14-member committee headed by Tanimu Turaki has been constituted to conduct the screening. Other members include former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State governor Jonah Jang, and former Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi.
Also serving on the panel are Chief Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Dr. Abdul Bulama, Dr. Esther Uduehi, Edo State PDP chairman Tony Aziegbemi, Dr. Sunday Solarium, and Chief Anicho Okoro, who will serve as administrative secretary.
Although the party’s official statement only referred to “one presidential aspirant,” party sources confirmed that Jonathan is the sole contender for the PDP presidential ticket.
The development follows confirmation last week by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, that Jonathan had completed his registration in the party’s fresh digital membership exercise approved by INEC.
The PDP faction aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also disclosed that it would screen 748 House of Representatives aspirants, 198 senatorial aspirants, 112 governorship aspirants, and 2,122 state House of Assembly hopefuls nationwide.
According to a statement posted on the party’s official Facebook page, the screening exercise is scheduled to begin simultaneously across the country on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
The party stated that the Interim National Working Committee had equally approved the composition of screening committees and appeal panels in line with the timetable and guidelines for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, former Imo State deputy governor Eze Madumere has declared his intention to contest the Owerri Senatorial seat under the PDP platform in 2027.
Madumere said he possesses the political structure, experience, and statewide support needed to secure victory for the party while pledging to promote inclusiveness, youth empowerment, and job creation in Owerri zone.
He expressed confidence in his popularity and political track record, insisting that his ambition would help advance equity, justice, and socio-economic development in the region.
