Iran has announced plans for a series of funeral ceremonies in honor of its late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, with events scheduled across several major cities in July as diplomatic uncertainty and ongoing conflict continue to shape the region.
According to Iranian state media, the commemorative events will begin in Tehran on July 4 and 5, ahead of an official state funeral in the capital on July 6. The ceremonies will then move to the holy city of Qom on July 7, where additional tributes will be held.
The final stage of the funeral proceedings is set for July 9 in Mashhad, where Khamenei will be buried at the revered Imam Reza Shrine following a concluding memorial service.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic discussions between Iran and the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump recently expressed optimism that a new agreement with Tehran would be finalized on Sunday, stating that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened to unrestricted international navigation once the deal takes effect.
However, Iranian officials have cast doubt on that timeline. A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry indicated that a signing ceremony was unlikely to occur on Sunday, suggesting instead that any agreement could be reached within the coming days.
Meanwhile, violence across the Middle East has continued unabated. Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon reportedly killed at least five people and prompted fresh evacuation directives affecting numerous communities.
In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes and artillery attacks were reported to have killed two Palestinians in the southern city of Khan Younis, while additional casualties and injuries were recorded in separate incidents in Gaza City.
The Lebanese group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for 22 attacks against Israeli forces within a 24-hour period. The group said it deployed drones and rocket barrages targeting military positions and troop concentrations in southern Lebanon and also reported intercepting several Israeli drones using surface-to-air missile systems.
The developments underscore the fragile security environment in the region as diplomatic efforts continue alongside escalating military confrontations.
