The United Kingdom has named veteran diplomat Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, marking a new chapter in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The appointment was announced on Monday by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which confirmed that Vowles will succeed Dr. Richard Montgomery and assume his new role in September 2026.
According to the FCDO, Vowles currently serves as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023. His appointment to Nigeria comes after more than two decades of service in diplomacy and international development across Africa and Asia.
Before his posting in Zimbabwe, Vowles served as FCDO Transformation Director from 2022 to 2023 and was the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Myanmar between 2021 and 2022. He also held the position of Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories at the former Department for International Development (DFID) from 2018 to 2021.
His extensive career includes leadership roles in Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. Over the years, he has worked on governance, development, health, security, and international partnership initiatives, earning a reputation as an experienced development and foreign affairs specialist.
Vowles joined DFID in 2006 after serving as a health and development consultant with Mott MacDonald. Earlier in his career, he worked with the World Bank in Bangladesh, Raleigh International, and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture.
The appointment reflects the UK’s continued commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and development ties with Nigeria, one of its most important partners in Africa.
Vowles is expected to formally take up his duties in Abuja in September 2026 following the completion of Dr. Montgomery’s tenure.
