In a detailed turn of events, an incident unfolded on July 7,
2023, following the receipt of credible
intelligence by the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd. A private security contractor known as
Messrs. Tantita Security Services, engaged by NNPC Ltd., took action based on
the information. They intercepted a suspicious vessel carrying a cargo of crude
oil.
The vessel in question was named MT TURA II, identified by
its International Maritime Organization (IMO) number: 6620462. It was owned by
HOLAB MARITIME SERVICES LIMITED, a Nigerian registered company with the
Registration Number RC813311. The vessel had been en route to Cameroon,
carrying the illicit cargo of crude oil when it was apprehended at an offshore
location. The specific coordinates of the interception were Latitude:
5.8197194477543235° and Longitude: 4.789002723991871°.
Upon boarding the vessel, the security team discovered the
captain and crew members on board. Preliminary investigations conducted by NNPC
Ltd. revealed that the crude oil cargo had been illegally sourced from an
offshore well jacket located in Ondo State, Nigeria.
A significant concern arose when it was discovered that
neither the vessel nor the crude oil cargo had valid documentation at the time
of arrest. This lack of proper paperwork further raised suspicions surrounding
the vessel’s activities and the legitimacy of its cargo.
Continuing the investigation, the NNPC Ltd. Command and
Control Centre delved deeper into the vessel’s history. Shockingly, it was
revealed that the MT TURA II had been operating in stealth mode for an
extensive period of twelve years. The last reported location of the vessel was
at the Tin Can Port back in July 2011. This revelation intensified concerns
about the vessel’s involvement in illicit activities.
With all the evidence gathered, the NNPC released an official
statement regarding the arrest and subsequent investigation. They promptly
escalated the details of the case and its findings to the appropriate
government authorities. After careful deliberation, it was decided that the
vessel should be destroyed to serve as a strong warning and deterrent to all
individuals involved in such illegal activities.
The NNPC emphasized the paramount importance of destroying
vessels engaged in transporting stolen crude oil as a means of deterring
further criminal activities. The illegal trade of stolen crude oil not only
resulted in significant economic losses for Nigeria and legitimate stakeholders
in the oil industry, but it also perpetuated a cycle of corruption,
environmental devastation, and social instability.
NNPC Ltd. assured the Nigerian people that they would
continue their efforts to combat crude oil theft until it was brought to a
complete halt. With a determination to preserve the nation’s economic
well-being, the NNPC vowed to sustain their momentum in the fight against these
unlawful activities.
