In a determined effort
to combat banditry and terrorism, Sheikh Gumi, a renowned Islamic scholar, has
expressed his readiness to engage in negotiations with the foot soldiers of
these groups.
Gumi emphasized the
importance of a comprehensive approach to address the issue of insecurity
prevailing in regions where these groups operate. He suggested the involvement
of emirs, scholars, and university professors who possess extensive research
knowledge on the subject. By convening a collective dialogue, Gumi believed
that sustainable peace could be achieved, enabling people to safely resume
their farming activities. While Gumi offered his voluntary participation, he
also clarified that he didn’t necessarily have to lead the negotiations.
It is worth noting that
this is not the first occasion on which the esteemed cleric has expressed a
willingness to negotiate with terrorists. Throughout 2021 and the early months
of 2022, Gumi openly voiced his concerns for the well-being of the country and
his home state of Zamfara, thereby advocating for dialogue with these groups.
