Manchester City boasts a
squad filled with talented players who have already achieved great success.
Stars like Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Jack
Grealish, Ederson, Ruben Dias, and John Stones have cemented their places in
the team’s history by winning the treble last season, a feat only matched by
their fierce rivals Manchester United.
While these names will
be remembered for their brilliance, there are other players in the City squad
who have played less significant roles but are equally important for squad
harmony and team spirit. However, every player wants to be on the pitch, eager
to contribute to the team’s success. Some players struggled to earn regular
playing time last season and now face a crucial period during pre-season and
the upcoming campaign to secure their futures.
The prime example of
such a player is Kalvin Phillips, who joined City from Leeds United the
previous summer to provide cover for Rodri in midfield after Fernandinho’s
departure. Unfortunately, Phillips had a difficult season, plagued by a
shoulder injury that disrupted his first half of the campaign. Pep Guardiola,
the City manager, expressed his frustrations at having to heavily rely on Rodri
due to Phillips’ absence.
Upon his return,
Phillips found himself playing catch-up in a club where it typically takes
players a year to adapt to Guardiola’s methods. Even when back on the bench,
Guardiola had limited trust in Phillips, resulting in minimal game time. His
longest cameo off the bench in the Premier League against Leicester City ended
disastrously and jeopardized the team’s lead.
Phillips didn’t start
his first league match until the title was already secured, and he only managed
to accumulate 593 minutes of action throughout the season. While Phillips
expected to play second fiddle to Rodri, he must have anticipated more playing
time.
Despite a disappointing
debut season, Phillips quickly dismissed rumors of his departure, expressing
his desire to prove himself at the Etihad. He stated that his intention is to
stay at the club, highlighting their recent treble victory as a reason to
remain. However, he acknowledged that if he continues to lack playing time, he
may need to reconsider his options. Phillips came to Manchester City to win
trophies, and even though they were successful, he didn’t play as much as he
had hoped. Now fully fit, he looks forward to working hard in the upcoming
season and making a strong impact.
Phillips’ determination
to prove himself is commendable, but if he doesn’t show significant improvement
soon, it might be challenging for him to secure a spot in the squad for a third
season.
Another player who
struggled in his first year at City was Sergio Gomez, although it was not
entirely his fault. Gomez was initially signed as a developmental addition with
the intention of loaning him out to further his progress. However, due to an
oversight by City, he had to remain with the team after Aleks Zinchenko
departed without a replacement, Marc Cucurella, secured. Gomez’s limited
appearances showed that he was not yet ready for the senior squad, which was
not surprising considering he had converted from an attacker to a midfielder.
Nonetheless, he has been impressive in the Under-21 Euros, playing as a winger
and contributing five goals in four games, helping Spain reach the final.
Gomez possesses
potential, but he needs to demonstrate it at City if he wants to stay in the
squad and avoid a loan or permanent transfer.
Meanwhile, Cole Palmer
has also been showcasing his abilities in the U21 tournament. In England’s
semi-final victory over Israel, Palmer scored a goal and provided two assists
in a convincing 3-0 win. The young playmaker has evident talent, evident from
his regular inclusion in the squad for the past couple of years. However, he
didn’t feature as frequently as anticipated last season, and at 21 years old,
it’s crucial for him to have a greater impact on games if he hopes to follow in
the footsteps of Phil Foden and become a mainstay in the City side.
Palmer faces competition
from his fellow Elite Development Squad (EDS) teammates, Tommy Doyle and James
McAtee. The duo spent the previous season on loan at Sheffield United and
played instrumental roles in the team’s promotion back to the Premier League. Having
experienced regular first-team football, they will undoubtedly be eager to
replicate that success at City.
While starting regularly
may be unlikely for them, there is a chance for one of the three talented
midfielders to earn a spot on the bench. They will have to impress during
pre-season to secure that role, or otherwise, face another season out on loan.
