Nigeria international and Everton midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has
opened up about the struggles his former
teammate, Dele Alli, faced during his
short-lived career at Goodison Park. Alli, who joined Everton from Tottenham
Hotspur, had a disappointing spell with the Toffees, making only 13 appearances
without scoring a goal or providing an assist before being loaned out to a
Turkish club last summer.
Unfortunately, Alli’s time at the Turkish club was also
marred by difficulties, as he suffered an injury that required surgery. His
loan move to Besiktas came to an abrupt end, leaving him in a difficult
situation as he had to return to England for treatment and recovery.
To add to his woes, Alli found himself at the center of
controversy when he was photographed with friends, surrounded by laughing gas
canisters commonly known as ‘hippy crack.’ This incident occurred despite Alli
not being fit to participate in matches due to his injury.
In defense of his England teammate of Nigerian descent, Iwobi
shed light on why Alli struggled to live up to expectations at Everton, a club
he had joined under the management of Frank Lampard in 2022. Iwobi explained
that Alli wasn’t particularly impressive in training sessions but often
excelled during actual matches.
Iwobi stated, “With him (Alli), he will say it himself,
he isn’t a training player. Unless it’s a match in training, and then you see
Dele perform.” According to Iwobi, Alli’s performance in training drills
was lacking due to his slower approach. However, when it came to competitive
matches, Alli would often contribute by scoring goals or providing assists.
Ultimately, Alli struggled to secure regular playing time at
Everton because he couldn’t consistently replicate his match performances in
training. The manager, Lampard, needed reliable players who could consistently
deliver during both training sessions and matches, and Alli’s inconsistency
posed a challenge.
Iwobi added, “He (Lampard) couldn’t really put his trust
in him. We all know Dele could have performed.” Despite Alli’s potential
and proven abilities, his inability to consistently impress in training led to
a lack of trust from the manager, which impacted his chances of regular game
time at Everton.
Due to Alli’s underwhelming performances and failure to make
a significant impact at Goodison Park, Everton may be compelled to sell him
during the upcoming summer transfer window. Additionally, the club has an obligation
to pay Tottenham Hotspur £10 million if Alli reaches 20 appearances for
Everton, which further complicates his future at the club.
