The National Commission for Museums and
Monuments (NCMM) has held its annual International Museum day on Tuesday, June
15, 2021. This year’s International Museum Day tagged: “The Future of Museums:
Recover and Re-imagine” focused on creating awareness and rethinking the
museum of the future to meet the challenges of the modern era.
International Museum Day was founded in
1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to raise public awareness
of the importance of museums in the development of society, and it has been
slowly gathering pace since then. Despite the constraints of a digital-only
format, #IMD2020 events reached over 83 million people on social media on May
18 alone.
In addition, a number of professionals
and communities developed, envisioned, and shared new (co-)creation of value
methods, business models for cultural institutions, and creative solutions to
the current social, economic, and international concerns in relation to
culture, artifacts and museums in national and international communities.
Furthermore, a book written by the Director
of Educational Services and Training, NCMM, Dr. Carolyn Nnanusa
Ezeokeke, entitled “Museum Education: Theory and Practice, The Nigerian
Experience” was formally launched and presented to the public. The occasion was
chaired by His Excellency, Former governor of Imo state, Sen. Rochas Okorocha, Chairman
Senate Committee on Art, Culture and Tourism, Nigeria. Some Nigerian Public
officers and cultural ambassadors who have contributed to the development of
the cultural heritage of Nigeria were recognized via award presentation.
The Director General of the Nigerian
National Commission for Museums and Monuments, and professor of Museology and
Anthropology, Abba Isa Tijani in an interview with TOPFLYERS MAGAZINE noted that
he was elated with the outcome of the event while promising that in his
administration, the commission would continually meet up with its mandates
which are to regulate antiquities in Nigeria, look after antiquities and
cultural heritage, preserve and display Nigeria’s cultural heritage for the
public to see and appreciate both nationally and internationally.
The recipients of this year’s award are:
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State,
Governor Samuel I. Ortom of Benue State, H. E. Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, former
Governor of Ogun state; H.E. Donald Duke, Former Governor of Cross River State;
Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, Hon Minister of State FCT; Rt. Hon. Peter Akpatason,
Deputy majority leader, House of Reps.; Etubom Arch. Bassey Eyo Ndem; Prof.
Oledinma Nwanna-Nzewunwa; Alh. Salman Abdulazeez Muhammed and Princess Okaine
Okojie
The historic event held at Rockview
Hotel, Royale, Wuse 2, Abuja, Nigeria was graced by cultural ambassadors, royal
fathers, public officers, journalists, clergy men and women, elder statements,
and other crème de la crème from all walks of life
