Abuja, Federal Capital Territory – A fire incident rocked the Nigerian Supreme Court building located in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Monday morning. The incident, reportedly ignited by an electrical fault, has raised concerns as the nation awaits a critical ruling on appeals filed by Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, and Atiku Abubakar, his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). These appeals challenge the decision of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) upholding the election of President Bola Tinubu.
According to reports from Arise TV, the fire damaged one of the chambers in the apex court building. Contrary to viral claims on social media, the Supreme Court spokesperson, Festus Akande, clarified that only one chamber was affected and not the offices of three Supreme Court justices, as previously suggested.
Akande vehemently denied rumors of an attack by hoodlums, stating that the fire was, in fact, caused by an electrical fault. Quick action by Supreme Court staff ensured that the fire was contained within the affected chamber and did not spread further.
In a reassuring statement made on Arise TV, Akande emphasized that the incident would not impact the ongoing presidential election case before the Supreme Court. This development comes at a crucial juncture in Nigerian politics, and the nation will be closely following the Supreme Court’s proceedings in the days to come.
