In a disappointing turn of events for Nigerian football enthusiasts, the Golden Eaglets will not be gracing the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup stage in Indonesia. The setback follows their failure to advance to the semifinals at the AFCON U-17 Championship held earlier this year in Algeria.
Drawn into Group B alongside Morocco, South Africa, and Zambia, the Nigerian team secured a second-place finish in the group, accumulating a total of six points. However, their journey came to an end in the quarterfinals, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Burkina Faso, dashing their hopes of World Cup qualification.
The four semifinalists, namely Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, and Morocco, will now proudly represent Africa at the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia.
In the tournament’s initial matchups, Mali dominated Uzbeskistan with a resounding 3-0 victory, while Morocco secured a 2-0 win against Paname.
The absence of Nigeria in this edition is a departure from their last qualification in 2019. The cancellation of the 2021 edition, originally slated to be hosted by Peru, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, added an additional layer of complexity to Nigeria’s bid for U-17 World Cup glory.
Nigeria holds a prominent place in the tournament’s history, being the most successful team with five titles secured in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015. Despite this setback, fans remain hopeful for the Golden Eaglets’ future successes on the international stage.
