Workers affiliated with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in Lagos State have heeded the call for an indefinite nationwide strike, following a directive from the National Executive Council of the labour unions. The decision, reached during a meeting held on November 13, 2023, in Abuja, reflects the unions’ dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s handling of critical issues affecting workers, including concerns related to minimum wage, insecurity, corruption, and governance.
The unrest gained momentum after the recent crisis in Imo State, where the NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, and other union members were allegedly brutalized. Both unions had presented demands to the government, which they claim have gone unanswered, leading to the decision to embark on the strike.
Despite the government’s warning on November 13, cautioning against the strike and citing a restraining order from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, the workers pressed forward with their protest.
Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, emphasized that the planned strike would amount to contempt of court. However, the unions proceeded with their action, highlighting the urgency of addressing the grievances raised.
The impact of the strike has already been felt, with the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers confirming its participation. Mr. Segun Esan, the Secretary General, stated that no trains were operational as a result of the strike. He emphasized that all railway workers were duty-bound to join the nationwide strike, resulting in the closure of offices, stations, workshops, and premises from the early hours of Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
Similarly, the President of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions, Mr. Oluwole Olusoji, reported that members had been advised to comply with the strike. He urged workers to ensure the protection of lives and property, remaining vigilant against potential opportunists seeking to exploit the situation. The association expressed its commitment to monitoring the unfolding situation closely.
