Edo State Deputy Governor, Mr. Philip Shaibu, disclosed his decision to contest the governorship election in 2024, emphasizing the imperative of practical governance to address the developmental challenges facing the state. Speaking at a media parley with the Edo State Journalists Forum in Abuja on Saturday, Shaibu outlined key factors, such as experience, capacity, and knowledge, that distinguish him from other contenders.
Despite calls for power to return to Edo Central Senatorial District, Shaibu dismissed the notion of a zoning convention, asserting that there is no agreement on the matter since the return to democracy in 1999. He stressed the urgent need for practical governance, citing the clamor from both local and international perspectives for governments to prioritize essential projects needed by the people.
Shaibu emphasized the importance of competence and experience in governance, asserting that the next governor should be someone capable of hitting the ground running from day one. He highlighted his familiarity with the debt profile of Edo State and his ability to secure funding for developmental projects.
Addressing speculation about his ambition to succeed Governor Obaseki, Shaibu clarified that he is not insisting on contesting but making himself available for the people. He underscored the interconnected destinies of the people and refuted the existence of a convention in Edo State regarding zoning, whether politically, traditionally, or in conferences.
On the question of whether it is the turn of Edo Central to produce the next governor, Shaibu pointed out that the issue of zoning has not played a significant role in past governorships. He noted the distribution of governors from Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North, highlighting that if he secures the PDP ticket, he would be the first candidate from Edo North since 1999.
Despite the reported rift between Obaseki and Shaibu, the Deputy Governor affirmed the PDP as his chosen platform for realizing his gubernatorial ambition. He stated that he is consulting, and while the outcome of his consultation will be made public in the coming days, his first, second, and third options are the PDP.
In a veiled reference to Governor Obaseki’s banking background, Shaibu emphasized his grassroots credibility, expressing his commitment to address the needs of the people. He highlighted his contributions as Deputy Governor, including sinking boreholes, renovating schools, and supporting religious institutions. As Shaibu continues his consultations, the political landscape in Edo State awaits further developments leading up to the 2024 election.
