In a Euro 2024 qualifier between Spain and Georgia, Barcelona midfielder Gavi faced a significant setback as he suffered a serious knee injury on Sunday. The 19-year-old had to leave the field in tears after a forceful tackle from behind resulted in a knee injury.
The Spanish football federation provided an initial assessment, stating, “It’s a serious injury to his right knee, but we need to wait to see how bad it actually is.” Gavi, who has become a key player for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, particularly over the past two years, is a La Masia youth academy product.
On Monday morning, tests were conducted on Gavi, revealing a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, along with an associated injury to the lateral meniscus. The footballer is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming days, and further medical updates will be provided after the procedure.
Throughout the current season, Gavi has made 15 appearances for Barcelona, featuring in the starting XI for 13 of them. Notably, he scored against Villarreal in the league and Royal Antwerp in the Champions League, in addition to providing one assist. The injury comes as a significant blow to both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, given Gavi’s pivotal role in the midfield.
