Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant legislative moment, President Bola Tinubu arrived at the National Assembly today to present the N27.5 trillion Appropriation Bill before a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The highly anticipated event unfolded with ceremonial precision, starting with the President’s entrance into the Chamber of the House of Representatives at precisely 11:13 a.m.
As President Tinubu stepped into the chamber, the gathering observed the recitation of the National Anthem, setting a formal tone for the proceedings. Shortly after, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, officially called the House to order at 11:15 a.m.
The President of the Senate then took charge of the proceedings, initiating the reading of the welcome address at 11:20 a.m. This marked the commencement of the much-anticipated presentation of the N27.5 trillion Appropriation Bill, a critical document outlining the government’s expenditure plans for the fiscal year.
Preceding today’s budget presentation by three weeks, President Tinubu had forwarded the 2024 – 2026 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper to both chambers. The MTEF included a proposed total expenditure profile of N26.1 trillion for the 2024 fiscal year.
The Senate, through its committee on Finance, engaged in a comprehensive two-week interactive session with heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to review revenue and expenditure projections. Following this rigorous process, the Senate approved the MTEF, but it was subsequently adjusted to the current figure of N27.5 trillion, which President Tinubu is presenting today.
This budget presentation holds significant weight as it outlines the government’s financial plans and allocations across various sectors for the coming fiscal year.
