
In a resolute stance to fortify Nigeria’s security apparatus, President Bola Tinubu declared on Monday that the battle to safeguard the nation is one he is unwaveringly committed to winning. Speaking at the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2023 in Maiduguri, Borno State, President Tinubu pledged to intensify efforts and provide unyielding support to the military in their mission to quell challenges facing the nation.
Asserting his determination, President Tinubu affirmed, “I have no intention of relenting or resting on my laurels in securing Nigeria; I will win the battle to keep Nigeria safe.”
Addressing the Chief of Army Staff and military personnel, the President commended the Nigerian Army’s dedication to national security. He urged the army to remain non-partisan while upholding democratic principles, particularly emphasizing their crucial role as guardians of constitutional order during elections.
A statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, quoted Tinubu as saying, “The professional conduct of the Armed Forces during the elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States underscores your role as a guardian of our constitutional order and democracy precepts.”
President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the numerous civilian-military projects across the country, highlighting their dual purpose of enhancing mutual understanding between the military and civilian population and improving the living conditions of the people.
Highlighting his commitment to national defense, Tinubu cited the recent procurement of new aircraft as evidence of the government’s determination to upgrade defense capabilities. He underscored the administration’s focus on modernization processes within the military, emphasizing improvements in mobility, communications, and offensive striking capabilities.
Expressing gratitude for the sacrifices of the armed forces, Tinubu recalled his approval of N18 billion in Group Life Assurance benefits for families of fallen heroes. He pledged continuous government support for the welfare of serving personnel and their families.
Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, commended President Tinubu for empowering the armed forces and fostering intra-military collaboration. He acknowledged the administration’s substantial investments to enhance military operational capabilities and pledged to sustain support for the Nigerian military in infrastructure provision.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, updated the President on ongoing military operations, noting significant successes in weakening criminal elements and addressing farmer-herders crises. He emphasized the importance of continuous evaluation, stating that the conference would formulate long-term strategies to fulfill constitutional responsibilities in 2024.
