In a heartbreaking incident, 26-year-old Femi Adegboyega and his 23-year-old sister, Ibukun Adegboyega, lost their lives in a drowning tragedy while enjoying an evening swim at Ibeshe Beach in the Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State. The unfortunate incident occurred on Christmas Day around 6:00 pm, leaving family and friends in shock.
The deceased, who were residents of FESTAC Town, Lagos, were reportedly accompanied by friends for a leisurely swim before the unforeseen disaster struck. Eyewitnesses, including Seun, who had been with them moments before the incident, struggled to comprehend the sudden turn of events.
“We were swimming together on the beach. To be honest, I do not understand how it happened because we were together, and all of a sudden, they both drowned. I wonder how their parents will feel now because they are brothers, and I also feel terrible because we could not help,” shared Seun, expressing condolences to the grieving family.
Despite efforts by friends and local divers to rescue the siblings, their attempts proved unsuccessful. Femi, another eyewitness, lamented the challenges faced during the rescue mission. “All efforts by his friends and local divers to rescue them from Ibeshe Beach did not work. The divers searched the beach but their bodies have not been found,” said Femi, expressing hope that the bodies would be recovered soon.
Swiftly responding to the situation, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the tragic incident. Divers have been enlisted to search for the bodies, and an ongoing investigation is in progress. Hundeyin assured that the family of the deceased had been notified.
“Divers have been employed to locate the bodies, and the family of the deceased are already informed, and the investigation is ongoing,” stated Hundeyin. The community now waits anxiously for the recovery of the bodies as the authorities work towards unraveling the circumstances surrounding this devastating Christmas Day tragedy.
