In a dazzling display of skill and excitement, over 120 bikers took to the streets of Calabar during the Bikers Parade session of the 20th Carnival Calabar held on Friday in Cross River. The bikers, representing seven clubs, enthralled onlookers with their mastery and prowess on exotic power-bikes, covering the 12km distance of the carnival route.
The revellers, who lined up along the route in significant numbers, cheered on the participating bikers as they showcased their unique skills. The Bikers Parade was a highlight of the 2023 Carnival Calabar, offering a spectacular spectacle for fun-seekers and enthusiasts.
During the flag-off ceremony for the Bikers Parade, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River, represented by his deputy, Peter Odey, emphasized the importance of safety. Governor Otu urged the bikers to prioritize safety, stressing the necessity of wearing helmets during the ride.
“Safety is our watchword; please, no biker should ride without a helmet. Please conduct this activity with safety. I assure you that by next year, myself and the executive governor will participate in this activity fully; we will get our motorbikes and other materials needed,” Governor Otu affirmed.
Dr. Gabe Onah, Chairman of the Carnival Calabar Commission, highlighted the purpose of the Bikers Parade, stating that it aimed to connect with bikers in the community and contribute to the local economy. He emphasized the importance of safety, urging all participating bikers to be properly kitted with helmets and safety gear.
“Your safety is our priority, and we want everyone to have a fantastic time while staying safe on the roads. Let’s ride responsibly and enjoy the carnival together, as no biker’s gang will be allowed into the route without being fully kitted,” Onah emphasized.
Mr. Akin Ricketts, the immediate past President of the Metallic Knights Motorcycle Club in Calabar, encouraged revelers to embrace biking as a peaceful hobby. He advised bikers to consider safety precautions to prevent unforeseen incidents during their rides.
The Bikers Parade not only added a thrilling dimension to the 20th Carnival Calabar but also underscored the importance of safety and responsible riding in fostering a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere for bikers and spectators alike.
