In a significant development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reopened its investigation into the alleged N100 billion fraud linked to former Rivers State governor, Peter Odili. This renewed probe comes after more than 16 years, during which the anti-graft agency had initially raised questions about the financial transactions under Odili’s administration.
The allegations revolve around the source and utilization of a substantial sum of N100 billion, prompting the EFCC to seek answers from Odili regarding how these funds either entered his private account or were expended during his tenure.
Peter Odili, who secured a perpetual injunction toward the end of his eight-year term as governor, is now faced with the task of addressing the financial impropriety claims that emerged during his bid for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the era of President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The genesis of Odili’s legal challenges dates back to the Obasanjo era when he faced obstacles in his pursuit of the PDP presidential ticket due to alleged financial irregularities within his administration. Notably, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who served as the chairman of the EFCC during that period, is currently the National Security Adviser (NSA) to President Bola Tinubu.
During the initial probe phase, Rotimi Amaechi, then the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly under Odili, was arrested by the EFCC to extract essential information related to the financial transactions of the state.
In 2008, Peter Odili obtained a perpetual injunction from a Federal High Court, preventing the EFCC, its chairman, and other operatives from investigating the financial records of the Rivers State government, including himself and any state official involved in the matter.
Now, after more than a decade and a half, the EFCC has signaled a renewed focus on the alleged fraud involving the former Rivers State governor. The reasons behind this revival remain unclear, and it is challenging to ascertain whether the renewed probe is connected to the ongoing political crisis in the state, as Odili is not the sole former governor currently under investigation.
