Amaju Pinnick, the Vice President of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Organising Committee, expressed optimism that the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, could bring home the trophy if they maintain their current level of determination and resilience. Pinnick shared these thoughts during an interview with Arise Television on Monday.
Being a Nigerian himself, Pinnick expressed deep interest in the Super Eagles’ performance and credited their display in the tournament. He commended the synergy between the leadership of the Nigerian Football Federation, including himself, the president, and the minister, emphasizing their collaboration with the technical crew to ensure a commendable performance.
Pinnick praised the nationalistic spirit exhibited by the players, highlighting their resilience and fighting spirit on the pitch. Reflecting on their recent game against Cameroon, he expressed confidence that if they continue in the same vein, Nigeria could secure the coveted trophy. He appreciated the team’s approach of taking it one game at a time.
While acknowledging the ongoing efforts of the Super Eagles, Pinnick also commended the AFCON committee for prioritizing the comfort of the players in Cote d’Ivoire. He highlighted the commitment to total club licensing requirements, ensuring top-notch pitch quality and excellent maintenance. Pinnick specifically noted the satisfactory accommodation arrangements throughout Cote d’Ivoire, with only a slight shortage reported in San Pedro, where the Moroccan team is based.
Pinnick expressed excitement about the overall quality of play, football artistry, organizational standards, and the excellence of the pitches in the tournament. He took the opportunity to extend gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his supportive gestures towards the Super Eagles.
Looking ahead, Pinnick stressed the importance of maintaining focus on the upcoming match against Angola, acknowledging the challenges they pose but expressing confidence in the team’s strategy and the commendable defense that has been recognized as one of the best in the tournament so far.
