Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed deep concern about the prevailing security challenges in Nigeria, highlighting the need for a decentralized police structure to address the escalating issues. The PDP governors conveyed their sentiments during a visit to the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, in Jos, the state capital.
The visit was prompted by a series of attacks and killings by gunmen in Plateau State, resulting in the loss of over 200 lives and significant property damage in various communities over the past month. Bala Muhammed, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and the Governor of Bauchi State, spoke on behalf of the delegation.
Governor Muhammed acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian police and other security agents but emphasized the low ratio between citizens and policing. He stressed the importance of decentralizing the security apparatus to allow for the establishment of state police across the country. According to Muhammed, the states are better equipped to understand the unique challenges within their territories, including local governments, towns, and villages.
The PDP governors advocated for the decentralization of security to enhance good governance and foster collaboration with security agencies. Muhammed highlighted the potential benefits of involving local structures in training youths, ensuring adherence to rules of engagement, and preventing abuses like extrajudicial killings.
The Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum referenced global best practices and urged the Federal Government to consider the establishment of state police, drawing inspiration from successful models like Amotekun. Muhammed expressed the party’s commitment to providing good governance despite limited resources.
During the visit, Muhammed commended Governor Mutfwang for his handling of the security challenges in Plateau State, emphasizing the need for Nigerians to sleep with their eyes closed. The PDP governors donated N100 million in support of the victims of the unfortunate incidents. Governor Mutfwang thanked the delegation for their visit and support, pledging to continue addressing security challenges and providing good governance for the people of Plateau State.
