In a thrilling quarter-final showdown on Friday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria emerged victorious against Angola, securing a 1-0 win and clinching a coveted spot in the semi-finals of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast. Ademola Lookman proved to be the hero of the day with his decisive goal.
The game kicked off with Nigeria showing promise early on, attempting shots within seconds. Ademola Lookman and Ola Aina ventured into the Angolan box, creating early opportunities. The Angolan squad, however, swiftly turned the tables, winning a corner in the second minute after a cross from winger Deivi Gilberto caused a deflection by stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong.
Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, showcased his skills with an impressive save from the resulting corner. Agostinho Mabululu’s attempt was thwarted by Nwabali, setting the tone for an intense battle.
Despite shared possession, it was Nigeria that broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Lookman netted his third goal of the tournament, joining the ranks of Nigerian legends Odion Ighalo, Austin Okocha, and Rashidi Yekini for scoring at least three goals in the knockout stages of a single AFCON tournament.
The decisive moment came when Moses Simon delivered a low cross to Lookman, who clinically smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range, leaving Angolan goalkeeper Signori Dominique helpless.
The first half concluded with Troost-Ekong deflecting Mabululu’s shot for a corner, offering a brief respite for the Angolans.
As the second half commenced, Angola sought to regain control by making a midfield substitution. However, Nigeria continued to dominate, with Alex Iwobi’s long-range effort deflected in the 47th minute.
An injury scare came for Nigeria in the 49th minute when Victor Osimhen went down near the Angola goal, but he resumed play after receiving treatment. Angola’s substitute, Antonio Zine, created tension among Nigerian supporters in the 59th minute with a close-range attempt hitting the far post.
In the 75th minute, Osimhen’s headed goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR check, denying Nigeria a chance to double their lead. The Eagles resiliently defended their lead, and Nwabali’s crucial saves ensured their triumph.
After the assistant referee signaled seven minutes of extra time, Nigeria held their ground, securing a well-deserved victory. The Super Eagles will now face the winners of the quarter-final clash between South Africa and Cape Verde on February 7, further fueling the excitement of fans and setting the stage for an exhilarating journey in the AFCON 2023.
