In a remarkable display of speed and agility, Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan has etched her name in the record books by setting a new African women’s indoor record in the 60 meters at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston. Amusan clocked an impressive 7.75 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 7.77 seconds set in Kazakhstan at the Astana Indoor Meet in January.
Despite her outstanding performance, Amusan secured the second position in Boston, with American athlete Tia Jones claiming the top spot with a time of 7.72 seconds. Devynne Chalton from the Bahamas followed closely with a time of 7.76 seconds.
It’s worth noting that Tobi Amusan had already exceeded the African record on January 27 in her inaugural race of the athletic season, surpassing the previous record held by compatriot Gloria Alozie.
In January, Amusan had set a new African women’s 60-meter hurdles indoor record with a time of 7.77 seconds at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan. This achievement marked a significant breakthrough, shattering Gloria Alozie’s longstanding continental mark of 7.82 seconds, established in 1999.
The 26-year-old sprinter clinched victory in the 60m hurdles final, outpacing American Nia Ali and Ireland’s Sarah Lavin. Tobi Amusan has consistently showcased her prowess on the track, making history in 2022 as the first Nigerian to secure a gold medal at the World Athletics Championship. Additionally, she shattered the women’s 100m hurdles world record on her way to this remarkable triumph.
