IMF Highlights Nigeria’s Economic Challenges in New Report

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has underscored the severity of Nigeria’s economic woes, citing stalled per-capita growth, poverty, and heightened food insecurity as exacerbating factors in the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. This revelation comes amidst a backdrop of rising inflation, exchange rate instability, sluggish economic growth, and widespread business closures.

In a recently published report titled ‘IMF Executive Board Concludes Post Financing Assessment with Nigeria,’ the global lender highlighted the detrimental impact of low revenue collection on the provision of essential services and public investment within the country.

According to the report, headline inflation surged to 27 percent year-on-year in October, with food inflation peaking at 32 percent. This spike was attributed to the removal of fuel subsidies, currency depreciation, and subpar agricultural production.

The IMF’s assessment painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s economic landscape, emphasizing the nation’s constrained fiscal space and limited reserves. Despite these challenges, the report acknowledged the authorities’ efforts to restore macroeconomic stability and foster sustained, inclusive growth.

Amid Nigeria’s economic struggles, the report revealed that the IMF’s Executive Board concluded the Post Financing Assessment on January 12, 2024, endorsing the Staff Appraisal. It also affirmed Nigeria’s capacity to repay its obligations to the IMF.

The IMF expressed cautious optimism regarding the new administration’s proactive measures in addressing structural issues, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates. Additionally, it commended the Central Bank of Nigeria’s commitment to price stability and the government’s initiatives to enhance domestic revenue mobilization.

However, concerns persist regarding Nigeria’s mounting debt burden. Data from the Debt Management Office indicated that Nigeria owes the IMF approximately $2.8 billion, with the federal government allocating a substantial portion of its 2024 budget towards debt servicing.

Professional services firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, warned that escalating debt service costs could further strain Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability, potentially impacting its credit rating outlook and borrowing costs. PwC projected a significant rise in debt servicing expenses, signaling the urgent need for comprehensive debt management strategies to mitigate financial risks and stabilize the economy.
