In a dramatic turn of events, Asue Ighodalo, former Chairman of Sterling Bank, emerged victorious in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election in Edo State, while Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu secured a parallel win in a separate contest.
The delegate election, which took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, saw Ighodalo triumph with a total of 577 votes, effectively clinching the PDP ticket. Notably, his candidacy was perceived as a proxy endorsement by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
However, in a parallel primary held elsewhere, Philip Shaibu asserted his claim to victory with 300 votes. Shaibu’s supporters alleged irregularities in the accreditation process and raised concerns about the authenticity of the delegate list.
Addressing his supporters, Ighodalo expressed gratitude for their unwavering support and outlined his vision for Edo State, pledging to build upon the foundation laid by Governor Obaseki. He emphasized the importance of assembling a competent team to drive positive change in the state.
Meanwhile, the chaotic scenes that unfolded during the primaries underscored the tense atmosphere surrounding the election. Gunmen reportedly invaded the venue, causing panic among delegates and disrupting proceedings. Despite the turmoil, Shaibu urged his supporters to remain peaceful and assured them that their voices would be heard.
As the dust settles on the contentious primaries, both candidates prepare to navigate the challenges ahead in their quest to lead Edo State. With the gubernatorial election looming, the political landscape in Edo remains fraught with uncertainty, highlighting the stakes for all involved parties.
