The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a food distribution initiative, commencing the sale of seized bags of rice to the public at a subsidized rate of N10,000 per 25kg bag. The announcement was made by the Comptroller General of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, during a press briefing in Lagos.
Adeniyi revealed that the sale process has been streamlined, requiring applicants to submit a form containing their details, including the National Identification Number (NIN), to generate a barcode for collecting the commodity. To facilitate accessibility, ten registration points will be opened to the public.
The Customs boss emphasized that the objective of selling the seized items at discounted prices is to alleviate the burden of high food prices and support the value of the Naira. He cautioned against the resale of purchased rice, warning of potential arrest and prosecution for offenders.
Furthermore, Adeniyi clarified that the initiative targets economically disadvantaged Nigerians, aiming to provide essential food items at affordable rates. Eligible beneficiaries include artisans, teachers, nurses, religious groups, and others within the operational areas of the NCS.
To ensure transparency and prevent misuse of the program, stringent security measures have been implemented throughout the supply chain. Adeniyi stressed the importance of adhering to guidelines and eligibility criteria, emphasizing that the items are intended solely for those in genuine need.
In a related development, the NCS leadership highlighted concerns regarding the outflow of food items to neighboring countries, posing a threat to Nigeria’s food security. Over 20,000 bags of assorted grains and other food items were intercepted, signaling the need for stricter border control measures.
The NCS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national interests and promoting transparency in its operations, pledging to uphold the highest standards of integrity while executing its duties.
