In response to a tragic stampede that resulted in the loss of seven lives during a rice distribution event on Feb. 23, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the suspension of its food disposal initiative. The unfortunate incident occurred at the NCS Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos State, where 25kg bags of rice were being distributed.
Mr. Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, disclosed the suspension in a statement issued on Monday. He emphasized that the decision was made to prioritize the safety of Nigerians and to allow the service to review its approach to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The food disposal initiative, which commenced on Feb. 20, aimed to address the challenges of food security and rising food prices in Nigeria by facilitating the direct disposal of forfeited food items to the Federal Government. The distribution of rice at discounted prices was intended to benefit indigent members of society.
However, the pilot distribution on Feb. 23 encountered unforeseen challenges when the supply of rice ran out, leading to heightened desperation among the crowd. As a result, a stampede ensued, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
Maiwada expressed regret over the incident and announced the suspension of the initiative pending an internal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the stampede. The NCS also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged support to them during this difficult time.
Addressing concerns raised by critics regarding the sale of rice at discounted prices instead of providing it for free to vulnerable groups, Maiwada clarified that the items had monetary value and were sold to generate revenue for the government. He emphasized that the discounted prices were intended to make the rice affordable for indigent individuals, but the overwhelming crowd at the distribution center necessitated a change in approach.
The NCS assured the public of its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in its operations and reiterated its determination to serve the best interests of all Nigerians.
