The Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, caused a stir on Thursday with his visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital. A photo from the visit depicting Bago kneeling before Tinubu has ignited widespread discussion, drawing reactions from across Nigeria.
Bago previously captured attention when he echoed sentiments expressed by Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate for the 2023 election, regarding the appropriateness of Nigeria accepting grain donations from war-torn Ukraine. During the Leadership Award ceremony at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Bago referred to Obi as “my boss” and expressed agreement with his stance. He emphasized the need for Nigeria to become self-sufficient and productive, denouncing reliance on handouts and palliative measures.
Obi voiced his disappointment, labeling it a national embarrassment that Nigeria, a country of abundant resources, was receiving food aid from Ukraine, currently embroiled in conflict. However, Information Minister Mohammed Idris defended the decision, asserting that accepting grain donations from Ukraine, grappling with the aftermath of war, was not a disgrace.
Bago’s recent visit to Tinubu, accompanied by the image of him kneeling before the political figure, has sparked debate among Nigerians, with opinions divided on the significance and implications of the gesture.
