Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi showcased their brilliance as Inter Miami advanced to the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup with a commanding 3-1 win over Nashville on Wednesday.
The former Barcelona duo combined early in the game, with Messi providing an assist for Suarez’s eighth-minute opener. Shortly after, Messi found the back of the net himself in the 23rd minute, extending Miami’s lead.
Despite Messi’s impressive performance, he was substituted in the 50th minute due to concerns about his hamstring, according to Inter Miami coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino.
Martino stated, “He has an overload in his right hamstring. So we didn’t want to take any risks. We tried to see if he could hold on a bit longer but it was bothering him and we preferred to take him out of the game.”
Inter Miami’s victory ensures their progression to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the second-leg match between Monterrey and FC Cincinnati. Monterrey currently holds a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
In the first leg against Nashville, Miami staged a remarkable comeback from a two-goal deficit, thanks to goals from Messi and Suarez. The duo once again proved crucial in securing victory for Miami in the second leg.
While Messi and Suarez attracted attention with their stellar performances, midfielder Diego Gomez’s impactful contributions did not go unnoticed. Gomez played a key role in creating opportunities for Miami’s attacking duo.
Nashville showed glimpses of threat, notably when Daniel Lovitz struck the post with a powerful volley. However, Miami’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper Drake Callender making crucial saves to maintain the lead.
Suarez further extended Miami’s advantage with a perfectly executed chip into the box, setting up Robert Taylor for a headed goal in the 63rd minute.
Although Nashville managed to score a late consolation goal through Sam Surridge, it was not enough to alter the outcome of the match.
Inter Miami’s victory adds to their impressive run in the competition, with each game presenting high stakes in the quest for success.
In other CONCACAF Champions Cup matches, Costa Rica’s Herediano secured their spot in the quarter-finals with a draw against Robinhood, while Club America defended a commanding lead against Chivas Guadalajara in an all-Mexican clash.
