Former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has criticized the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) for failing to transfer Binance executive Nadeem Anjarwalla to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid allegations of financial misconduct.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Amachree argued that since the NSA lacks a detention facility and is not a security agency, it should have handed over Anjarwalla to the appropriate authorities.
Amachree emphasized the importance of placing Anjarwalla and his colleague, Tigran Gambaryan, on a watch-list when they were initially detained in Abuja in late February. He suggested that the Nigeria Immigration Service should have been notified to flag their names and photos at all airports across the country.
“If the man has been flagged as a threat or a suspected person, he should have been watchlisted,” Amachree stated, highlighting concerns about the handling of the case.
Expressing disbelief at the leniency shown to Anjarwalla, Amachree questioned why the suspect was allowed access to a telephone and permitted to leave for prayers at a nearby mosque, only to disappear thereafter.
“There is a compromise,” Amachree asserted, implying possible collusion between the suspect and certain security agents. He urged authorities to thoroughly interrogate the arrested individuals to uncover any potential corruption.
Amachree’s remarks underscore ongoing scrutiny over the handling of high-profile financial misconduct cases and raise questions about the effectiveness of security protocols in preventing suspects from fleeing justice.
