Bashir El-Rufai, the son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has engaged in a war of words with Governor Uba Sani over the state’s debt profile.
The confrontation stems from remarks made by Governor Sani, who accused the El-Rufai administration of leaving behind a substantial debt burden for the state. According to Sani, the previous administration saddled Kaduna with debts totaling $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities, making it challenging for the state to meet its financial obligations, including salary payments.
Governor Sani stated, “Despite the huge debt burden…we remain resolute in steering Kaduna State towards progress and sustainable development. It gladdens my heart to inform you that despite the huge inherited debt of the state, till date, we have not borrowed a single kobo.”
Responding to these allegations, Bashir El-Rufai took to social media to lambast Governor Sani, accusing him of seeking a scapegoat for his administration’s shortcomings. In a scathing post on his X handle, El-Rufai criticized the governor’s leadership, referring to him and his aides as “unserious clowns” who were incompetent and reliant on deflecting blame.
El-Rufai’s remarks underscore the growing tensions between the current administration and its predecessor in Kaduna State, as both sides engage in a war of words over the state’s financial management and development trajectory.
