President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Afam Osigwe (SAN) on his election as the new President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). The congratulatory message was conveyed in a statement signed on Monday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
Titled “President Tinubu Congratulates NBA President-elect, Afam Josiah Osigwe,” the statement highlights Tinubu’s commendation for Osigwe’s achievement. Osigwe, a former general secretary of the NBA, was elected in the 2024 NBA election, which was conducted online from 12:00 am Saturday and concluded at 11:59 pm.
The final vote count, announced on Sunday afternoon, showed Osigwe leading with over 20,000 votes, significantly ahead of his two main contenders. Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman of the NBA-Institute of Continuing Legal Education Governing Council, secured 10,998 votes, while former NBA Lagos Branch Chairman, Chukwuka Ikwuazom (SAN), received 9,018 votes.
In his statement, Ngelale wrote, “The President also congratulates all newly elected officers of the NBA and members of the association on a successful conduct of the elections. President Tinubu commends the outgoing NBA President, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), on his stewardship of Nigeria’s foremost legal association.”
President Tinubu assured the new leadership of the NBA of his administration’s support in tackling challenges facing the association and the legal profession at large. This gesture signifies a commitment to fostering a collaborative relationship between the government and the legal community.
Osigwe’s election marks a new chapter for the NBA, with expectations high for his tenure to address critical issues and advance the interests of legal practitioners in Nigeria.
