The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has indefinitely suspended an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II) after a video surfaced showing the officer allegedly soliciting a bribe from a traveller at an airport. The announcement was made by the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, through a statement released by the Service Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.
The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, captures the officer’s interaction with the traveller, an incident that has sparked public outrage. The NIS quickly condemned the officer’s behavior, stressing that it does not align with the values and professional ethics the Service is committed to upholding.
Comptroller General Nandap emphasized that the NIS is dedicated to rooting out corruption within its ranks, in line with its zero-tolerance policy on corruption. She assured the public that disciplinary procedures are underway to address the misconduct, and the officer has been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome.
“This disgraceful act is not a representation of our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy,” Nandap stated, reaffirming the NIS’s commitment to improving service standards. She also highlighted ongoing reforms, including the installation of electronic gates (e-gates) at all international airports, aimed at facilitating smoother travel for passengers and preventing similar incidents in the future.
The NIS urged the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption by its officers, reinforcing its dedication to ensuring integrity and professionalism in its operations.
This suspension is part of broader efforts by the NIS to maintain a corruption-free environment and enhance the reputation of Nigeria’s immigration services both domestically and internationally.
