A tragic boat accident in the Dundaye community of Wamakko Local Government Area in Sokoto State has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, while many others have been rescued. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, with rescue efforts continuing into Monday.
The Head of the Sokoto Field Operation Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Aliyu Kafindangi, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria. He reported that 24 people were on board when the boat capsized. A combined rescue team, including NEMA, the Nigerian Red Cross, the Fire Services, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local divers, managed to save 19 individuals from the waters.
Kafindangi detailed that one body was recovered on Sunday, with three more found on Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to four. Unfortunately, one person remains missing, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Expressing gratitude, Kafindangi acknowledged the support from both the state and local governments, as well as the community members, for their assistance in the rescue operations. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but authorities are continuing their investigation into the tragic incident.
