Abuja, Nigeria – The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the allocation of $27 million in humanitarian aid to Nigeria, as part of a larger $536 million aid package directed towards Sub-Saharan Africa. This effort by the U.S. Government aims to support vulnerable populations and host communities grappling with various crises across the continent.
In a statement released on Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, underscored the importance of this assistance, stating, “This aid will make a real difference in the lives of those most in need in Nigeria and across the continent.” He highlighted the U.S. commitment to helping Nigeria confront significant humanitarian challenges, including food insecurity and the growing impacts of climate change.
The comprehensive aid package, which was officially announced by Uzra Zeya, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, brings the total U.S. humanitarian assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa for Fiscal Year 2024 to nearly $3.7 billion. The funds are designated to address the urgent needs of vulnerable groups, including refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, and other populations affected by conflict.
According to the statement, the $27 million allocated to Nigeria will be channeled through the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, as well as USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. These funds are intended to help mitigate the impact of ongoing crises, particularly in regions like the Sahel, by supporting initiatives such as voluntary returns of displaced persons and the integration of refugees.
Ambassador Mills reaffirmed the U.S.’s solidarity with Nigeria, stating, “We stand with Nigeria in its efforts to provide for vulnerable populations and build resilience against food insecurity and climate change impacts.” The aid is expected to play a crucial role in alleviating the humanitarian challenges that have been exacerbated by various socio-economic and environmental factors in the country.
The U.S. continues to be a key partner in Nigeria’s efforts to address these challenges, with this latest funding representing a significant contribution towards improving the lives of millions affected by humanitarian crises across the nation.
