In anticipation of the upcoming September 12 governorship election in Edo State, two groups— the Ambassador Peter Orobor Foundation (POF) and the Asue/Ogie Support Group Abuja—have announced plans to provide free transportation for eligible voters residing in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative is aimed at ensuring a significant turnout of Edo indigenes in Abuja who wish to cast their votes.
Speaking at a mega rally organized by the groups in Abuja on Friday, Dr. Peter Orobor, President of POF, revealed that over 5,000 eligible voters have already registered for the free transportation service. These voters have expressed their support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, whose manifesto promises substantial development for Edo State.
“This forum is organized to galvanize support for the PDP candidate. We are gathered here as representatives of various groups of Edo indigenes in Abuja,” said Orobor. He emphasized that the initiative is part of their commitment to ensuring that the PDP candidate receives strong backing from Edo voters in the FCT. “We are also making arrangements to mobilize and transport every Edo indigene in FCT down to Edo for the election at no cost to them,” Orobor added.
Orobor also called on all candidates in the Edo governorship election to maintain peace and decorum before, during, and after the election, especially by signing the peace accord.
In his remarks, Dr. Aghughu Adophus, former Auditor General of the Federation, urged Edo indigenes to elect a capable leader for the governorship position. He cautioned against the influence of poverty and violence in the electoral process, stressing the importance of a free and fair election. “Youths that are engaged in violence are risking their lives unnecessarily,” Adophus warned. He encouraged the youth to support Ighodalo, whom he believes has a clear plan for their future.
The groups’ initiative underscores the importance of civic participation and the collective efforts of the Edo diaspora in the FCT to shape the future leadership of their state.
