In a decisive move to combat the escalating menace of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the North-West region, the Federal Government has directed the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, along with other top military chiefs, to relocate to Sokoto State. The directive aims to bolster efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
This development was announced in a statement by Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence. The government expressed deep concern over the ongoing activities of terrorists and bandits in the North-West, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to eradicating these threats.
Dr. Matawalle, addressing the situation, stated that the relocation to the North-West would enable close supervision of military operations aimed at dismantling the notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang. He highlighted a recent incident in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where bandits circulated videos of a Nigerian military armored vehicle stuck in a waterlogged area. The bandits later recorded themselves celebrating around the vehicle, which they found after the military withdrew to avoid an ambush.
“This is unacceptable, especially given the significant support President Bola Tinubu has extended to the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Matawalle remarked. “The Federal Government is fully committed to deploying all necessary resources to ensure these criminal elements are flushed out and peace is restored to our communities.”
He further emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that intensified and consistent military operations would weaken the bandits’ strongholds and restore freedom of movement for the people in the region. Matawalle assured residents of Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and the entire North-West that security forces would leave no stone unturned in eliminating the bandit threat.
“I will be on the ground in the North-West alongside the Chief of Defence Staff and other military leaders, leading our brave men and women in uniform,” he said. Matawalle also urged the local population to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces, reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians.
The Minister concluded by reaffirming that the security and well-being of the people remain the government’s top priority. The strategic move to relocate top defence officials to the region underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to address the security challenges facing the North-West.
