Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed his willingness to collaborate with other political figures who share his vision for Nigeria’s development, stating that his primary focus is not on political office but on addressing the country’s pressing issues. Obi made these remarks through a series of posts on his official X account, clearing up recent misunderstandings surrounding his political stance.
Responding to claims of his comments being distorted following an interview with News Central TV, Obi clarified that he is committed to Nigeria’s advancement rather than being consumed by the race for the 2027 elections. He also emphasized that his intention is not to align with candidates whose objectives revolve around “state capture.”
“I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV,” Obi wrote. “Some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.”
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, reiterated that he does not want to focus on the 2027 elections while Nigerians are currently struggling with severe issues such as hunger, poverty, and insecurity. He emphasized his commitment to progress, not just for personal political gain.
“I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges,” Obi stated. “I am open to working with others, provided their intentions are not centred on state capture. My goal is to partner with those who share my vision for Nigeria’s progress.”
Obi affirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and noted that any political alliances would require full transparency from potential partners. He also addressed speculation about his potential candidacy for the 2027 election, stressing that his decision to run, if made, would not be based solely on winning office, but on building a better Nigeria.
“I remain committed to the Labour Party. If I decide to run for any office in 2027, it will not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election,” he said.
Obi reiterated his dedication to policies focused on improving education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, particularly bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms and addressing the challenges that Nigerians face daily.
In conclusion, he dispelled rumors about accepting a vice-presidential role, stating, “I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone, and it’s unequivocal.”
Obi remains steadfast in his commitment to a new Nigeria and affirmed that he could contribute to the nation’s progress without necessarily holding public office, a task he believes he is already undertaking in various capacities.
