Officials from the Police Service Commission (PSC) have arrived in Benin, Edo State, to oversee police conduct during the upcoming governorship election scheduled for September 21.
A statement released on Thursday by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations for the PSC, confirmed that the team, led by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Taiwo Lakanu, will monitor police officers’ performance throughout the election process. The team will operate across the three senatorial districts in the state, ensuring that law enforcement upholds their duties impartially.
According to the statement, “The monitoring of police conduct during elections is part of the Commission’s mandate to support Nigeria’s growing democracy.” Police officers are expected to remain neutral and guarantee the safety of voters, voting materials, and the entire electoral process.
DIG Lakanu emphasized the importance of civility and discipline among officers on electoral duty, stating that their role is crucial to the success or failure of the election. The PSC has also vowed to take disciplinary action against any officers who act unprofessionally while commending those who demonstrate exemplary conduct.
Additionally, the PSC has released dedicated telephone numbers for voters to report any misconduct or commend officers during the election. These numbers cover different senatorial zones in Edo State, ensuring real-time feedback from the public.
