The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has successfully uploaded 98.58% of the results from the Edo State 2024 governorship election to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV). As of 8:40 am on Sunday, results from 4,455 out of the 4,519 polling units in the state had been made available to the public through the portal.
The election, which saw participation from a variety of political candidates, is set to determine the successor of Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose second term in office ends on November 11. Notable candidates in the race include Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).
Edo State, home to 2,629,025 registered voters, saw a high level of engagement with 85.57% of these voters (2,249,780) possessing Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), according to INEC. The commission worked to ensure transparency by deploying the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for accreditation and electronic transmission of results.
Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, reassured voters that the process of uploading results to the IReV portal has been smooth. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Onuoha highlighted that any potential network disruptions were anticipated but that contingency plans were in place to ensure that the electronic transmission of results continues as expected.
“We have trained our BVAS operators and they are set. BVAS will handle voter accreditation and verify the total number of voters at each polling unit. After voting, the results will be counted and uploaded to IReV,” Onuoha stated.
With the majority of the results already on the portal, the public now eagerly awaits the official announcement of the new governor-elect, a key figure who will steer Edo State into the future.
