Tension in Abuja as Police Disperse #FearlessInOctober Protesters With Teargas

ABUJA – Chaos erupted in the streets of Abuja on Tuesday as Nigerian police fired teargas at hundreds of protesters participating in the #FearlessInOctober demonstration against poverty, economic hardship, and poor governance. The protests, which took place in the Jabi and Utako districts of the Federal Capital Territory, quickly turned tense as police sought to disperse demonstrators, forcing both residents and protesters to flee the scene in panic.

The #FearlessInOctober movement is part of a nationwide outcry aimed at pressuring the Nigerian government to address the deepening economic crisis, growing insecurity, and perceived failures in leadership. Protesters carried banners with bold messages such as “We are hungry” and “Enough is Enough – Revolution Now,” reflecting the growing frustration across the country.

Many Nigerians have been hit hard by skyrocketing food prices, particularly the cost of a bag of rice, which now exceeds N100,000, and fuel prices, which have soared past N1,000 per litre. These rising costs have only exacerbated the already dire levels of poverty affecting millions, making the protest a call for urgent government action.

According to eyewitnesses, several protesters sustained injuries as they scrambled to escape the teargas fired by police, though official casualty figures were not immediately available. The demonstration, however, was largely peaceful before the police crackdown.

One protester, speaking before the dispersal, voiced the frustration felt by many: “The Nigerian government seeks to repress, suppress, and oppress the Nigerian people to the point where they become too afraid to express their fundamental rights. However, today, we are showing the government through our actions that our voices can never be silenced.”

The protester continued, highlighting the hardships faced by everyday citizens: “The government should not expect us to remain quiet in the face of our poverty, suffering, insecurity, and poor leadership in every sector. A bag of rice costs about N100,000, and we are buying fuel for over N1,000. And you say that is not enough? No.”

The demonstrations, which began on Tuesday morning, attracted people from all walks of life, united in their demand for the government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens. Organizers of the #FearlessInOctober protests argue that the current administration’s policies have failed to deliver on promises of economic relief and improved security.

Despite the heavy police presence and the use of teargas, the protesters vowed that their struggle for better living conditions would continue, warning that the government’s response to their grievances only fuels their resolve.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with its economic challenges, the #FearlessInOctober movement is likely to persist, raising questions about how the government will address the growing discontent among its citizens.
