The Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims made by former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, in a viral video, where he boasted about having the ability to bring down military aircraft allegedly flying over his residence during the recent local government elections in Rivers State. Dokubo suggested that the aircraft were sent to intimidate him due to his support for the elections and asserted that the federal government knew of his capacity to shoot down any aircraft.
Responding to these claims, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated on Thursday that Dokubo’s remarks were “laughable” and should not be taken seriously. Buba emphasized that Dokubo’s comments were mere “blabbing” and that he did not have the capability to challenge the Nigerian military or its equipment.
“Dokubo does not have the capacity to bring down a military aircraft. The military operates professionally, adhering to democratic standards in all operations,” Buba said, dismissing the militant’s claims as false. He added that various government agencies, including the military, regularly use helicopters and aircraft for national security purposes, and there was no indication that any were deployed to intimidate individuals during the elections.
Buba further noted that it was up to the relevant authorities to determine any legal steps to be taken regarding Dokubo’s statements, while reiterating the military’s continued focus on maintaining security across the nation.
In a separate matter, Buba addressed rumors concerning the escape of 13 repentant Boko Haram members from a rehabilitation camp, some reportedly with rifles. He clarified that the military was not directly responsible for the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRRR) program, though measures were being taken to ensure its effectiveness moving forward.
On the broader fight against insurgency, Buba provided an update on military operations in the North West, stating that over 300 terrorist commanders had been neutralized in recent months. He also revealed that the military had adjusted its strategy in the region to mirror successes achieved in the North East, adding that some wanted terrorist leaders had begun showing interest in surrendering as part of the newly launched “Operation Fasan Yamma.”
