The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of seven ministerial nominees put forward by President Bola Tinubu, following a rigorous screening process. The screening and subsequent approval took place yesterday, with each nominee presenting their qualifications, plans, and strategies for their respective ministries during a full committee session. Final confirmation occurred during the Senate’s plenary session.
The confirmed ministers and their assigned ministries include:
- Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda (Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction)
- Muhammadu Dingyadi (Labour and Employment)
- Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu (Minister of State, Foreign Affairs)
- Dr. Jumoke Oduwole (Industry, Trade, and Investment)
- Idi Mukhtar Maiha (Livestock Development)
- Yusuf Ata (State, Housing and Urban Development)
- Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad (Minister of State, Education)
During the questioning, senators focused on eliciting fresh ideas and actionable plans from each nominee. South-East senators, including Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, and Tony Nwoye, specifically praised Tinubu for nominating Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, widow of the revered Igbo leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, describing the choice as a step toward a Government of National Unity.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, reaffirmed her dedication to fostering unity and peace. “If we sincerely commit to unity and focus on peace, Nigeria’s potential is limitless,” she stated, emphasizing the combined efforts of cultural, governmental, and diplomatic organizations to drive meaningful change.
In his remarks, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the new Minister of Livestock Development, highlighted a strategic plan to address the long-standing issue of farmers-herders conflicts through the development of 417 grazing areas nationwide. He outlined the ministry’s intent to create a comprehensive database for animal husbandry infrastructure, including grazing reserves, cattle routes, and viable dams. “Our vision is to work with critical stakeholders to ensure sustainable development of these reserves,” he explained.
Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the new Minister of Trade and Investment, expressed her commitment to advancing President Tinubu’s economic policies, emphasizing investment, productivity, and job creation. She noted early signs of economic stabilization due to recent monetary and fiscal reforms, adding, “The convergence of monetary and fiscal policies with trade, investment, and industrial strategies will drive economic growth.”
This latest round of appointments has drawn attention for its strategic diversity and emphasis on addressing long-standing issues within the country.
