President Bola Tinubu has postponed the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting initially scheduled for Wednesday, as a mark of respect for the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on Tuesday night. This decision was announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who added that a new date for the FEC meeting would be announced soon.
The president’s decision to reschedule the council meeting underscores the high regard and deep respect held for General Lagbaja, who led the Nigerian Army from June 2023 until his passing on November 5, 2024. In honor of the fallen general, President Tinubu has also directed that flags be flown at half-mast across Nigeria for a full week.
Earlier in the day, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the family of Lt. General Lagbaja and the Nigerian Armed Forces, commending the general’s unwavering dedication and service to the country. “General Lagbaja’s contributions to Nigeria were invaluable, and he will be remembered for his commitment and leadership in the defense of our nation,” Tinubu stated, wishing him eternal peace.
The postponement and the national period of mourning reflect the significance of General Lagbaja’s role and legacy within Nigeria’s military history, as well as the government’s dedication to honoring those who have served with distinction.
