Zelensky Warns of Dire Consequences if U.S. Military Aid to Ukraine is Cut

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s ongoing invasion could falter if the United States reduces its military funding. In a candid interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Zelensky stated that the outcome of the conflict heavily depends on continued U.S. support.

“If they cut [military funding], we will — I think we will lose,” Zelensky said. While emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to defending itself, he admitted, “We will fight. We have our production, but it’s not enough to prevail. And I think it’s not enough to survive.”

The Role of U.S. Aid in Ukraine’s Defense

Since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, the United States has been Ukraine’s largest supporter, providing billions in military aid, including advanced weapons systems. Zelensky underscored the importance of U.S.-Ukrainian solidarity, calling their “unity” the most critical factor in the ongoing conflict.

The potential reduction of U.S. aid has become a topic of concern as political dynamics in Washington shift. Incoming U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has frequently criticized the Biden administration’s extensive funding of Ukraine’s defense efforts. Trump has pledged to end the war quickly but has not disclosed specific plans for achieving peace.

Escalation and Strategic Challenges

The debate over U.S. aid has intensified following the Biden administration’s decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range American missiles for strikes inside Russia. While this move has been lauded by Kyiv as a critical step in countering Russian aggression, it has faced sharp criticism from some U.S. lawmakers, who view it as a dangerous escalation.

Zelensky addressed these concerns, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains a significant threat but is not insurmountable. He suggested that Trump could leverage his influence to push Putin toward ending the conflict, stating, “Trump could influence [Putin] because he is much stronger than Putin.”

Zelensky also described Putin as “weaker than the United States,” emphasizing that any chance of ending the war peacefully depends heavily on America’s position and actions.

Concerns Over Negotiations and Peace Talks

As Russia continues to make gains in key areas, discussions about potential peace negotiations have gained traction internationally. However, Ukraine remains wary of entering talks from a position of weakness, particularly if U.S. support diminishes.

“Putin can be willing to end this war, but it also depends on the United States of America much more,” Zelensky said, stressing the importance of maintaining a united front to secure a favorable outcome for Ukraine.

Implications for Global Security

The Ukrainian president’s remarks come at a time of mounting tension between advocates for continued military assistance and those pushing for a scaled-back U.S. role in the conflict. Observers warn that reducing aid could not only compromise Ukraine’s ability to defend itself but also have far-reaching implications for global security and the balance of power in Europe.

Zelensky’s plea serves as a stark reminder of the high stakes involved, not just for Ukraine but for the broader international order. As the conflict grinds on, the future of U.S. involvement remains a critical factor in determining the war’s outcome and its long-term impact on global stability.
