Governor Okpebholo Suspends Market Unions in Edo State, Orders Arrest of Defaulters

In a decisive move to address rising food prices and alleged extortion by market unions, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced the immediate suspension of all market unions and associations in the state. The directive, dated November 19, 2024, was conveyed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor.

Governor Okpebholo also instructed the police and other security agencies to arrest any leaders of the affected unions who flout the suspension order.

Concerns Over Market Activities

The decision comes amid growing reports of exploitative practices by market union executives. According to the governor, these unions have been accused of preventing farmers from selling their produce directly to consumers and arbitrarily inflating the prices of staple foods, which has adversely affected low-income earners in Edo State.

“Their actions have ultimately led to an astronomical rise in the prices of staple food in the State, thereby making life unbearable for the common Edo man,” the statement read.

The governor condemned these activities as “extortionist in nature” and pledged to take a stand against actions that exploit residents.

Government’s Justification

While acknowledging the importance of market traders to the state’s economy, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that this does not excuse the alleged misconduct by market union leaders.

“The Edo State Government appreciates the role of market traders and their contribution to the economy of our dear state. However, it will not allow a few individuals under the guise of market union executives to hold the entire state to ransom through selfish and extortionist activities,” the statement added.

Security Measures and Enforcement

To ensure compliance, security agencies in the state have been placed on high alert. The government has warned that any individual or group defying the suspension order will face legal consequences.

The clampdown on market unions is part of Governor Okpebholo’s broader effort to create a fair and affordable marketplace for residents of Edo State.

Implications for Edo Residents

The suspension of the unions is expected to open up markets, allowing farmers to sell directly to consumers without interference. This move aims to stabilize food prices and alleviate the financial burden on the state’s citizens, especially low-income earners.

Governor Okpebholo’s administration has reiterated its commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Edo residents and taking bold steps to eliminate exploitation in the marketplace.
